Let me just start off by saying, I love Amazon and Amazon Prime! But I can see the wheels turning in your head already. What does Amazon Prime have to do with homesteading?!
First off, What Does Amazon Prime Offer?
Before we talk about how Amazon Prime relates to homesteading, lets talk about what it has to offer.
Amazon Prime is a paid service – $99 per year, although you can get a free 30 day trial – that provides it’s members with many benefits. Below are just some of those benefits:
- Free two day shipping! – This is a huge benefit! I will go into detail on this one in just a little bit.
- Free Video Streaming – While the plethora of movies available for free with your subscription are not as diversified as say Netflix, there are still a good selection of titles available.
- Prime Music – Music streaming that allows you to create your own play lists and has many search options.
- Cloud Drive – 5GB of storage on Amazon Cloud Drive.
- Prime Photos – Unlimited photo storage on amazon cloud drive.
- Kindle Lending Library – Borrow 1 Kindle book per month from over 1 million titles
There are a few other benefits as well but these are the best benefits in my opinion.
So again, what does this have to do with homesteading?
Picture this story.
A large storm is headed your way – a hurricane perhaps, or maybe a blizzard. You have 3 days to prepare before this event hits. Everyone and their grandma is at Walmart getting ready for the storm. They are buying up food, water, generators, first aid kits, you name it. The shelves are bare.
Lets face it, places like Walmart aren’t a place you want to be during good times, let alone during a natural disaster! But you don’t have to worry about that, you can order from Amazon without having to leave your home!
With free 2 day shipping, all of your supplies (including a big heavy generator) will be delivered to your doorstep before the hurricane or blizzard even hits. That frees you up to do things like preparing your home and your animals, instead of running from store to store looking for the last generator known to man.
In a previous article we talked about how to earn extra income by using Swagbucks. And in that article, what did I say I generally cash in those Swagbucks for? That’s right…Amazon Gift cards! Now we are function stacking!
The story above is a good enough reason to purchase Amazon Prime, but let me give you one more disaster story.
You forgot your mother in laws Birthday this weekend! Duhn, duhn duhhh!!!
Of course you can buy a gift and mail it but the 2 day shipping will cost you an arm and a leg! You can order online at some other retailer and have it shipped direct to her house. They may or may not have 2 day shipping available. Either way you will still be paying and arm and a leg for it. With Amazon Prime you don’t have to worry about it! Disaster averted! – Ask me, I speak from personal experience!
Is it Really for me?
As I have mentioned throughout this whole article, the free two day shipping alone pays for itself. But if you are the type that never orders online and you aren’t willing to change your shopping habits, then Amazon Prime may not be for you. At the very least, try the free 30 day trial (especially around Christmas time) and see how you like it.
But if you are like my family, you need to sign up for Amazon Prime today!
